'Anything's Possible' Review: Billy Porter Expands the Possibilities of Teen Romance in Trans High School Movie
Baton Porter is known for being in front of the camera — near famously as Pray Tell on "Pose" and recently delivering a gender-bending twist on everyone'south favorite fairy godmother in Amazon's musical movie "Cinderella."
Now, the Emmy-winning actor is stepping backside the photographic camera to make his feature flick directorial debut with "Annihilation's Possible," a John Hughes-esque coming-of-age dramedy virtually trans high schoolhouse senior Kelsa (trans newcomer Eva Reign), who is navigating her first boyfriend, Khal ("Katy Keene" actor Abubakr Ali), friendship and family unit life with her single mom (Renée Elise Goldsberry).
"I own't Barbra Streisand yet," Porter tells me, laughing. "It's like, permit me exercise i thing at a time. Let me directly something offset. Then I'll direct something and exist in it too."
In "Anything's Possible," the spotlight is on Reign, seen here in an exclusive first look at the film. A native of Missouri, Reign was working as a journalist in New York City earlier she pursued acting. "Information technology felt kind of strange walking into all of this because everyone else in the cast, they've all gone to similar Carnegie Mellon or Yale, and they've been on Broadway," Reign tells me. "And I'g like, 'Yeah, I took classes in the Village.'"
Like Netflix'southward much buzzed about "Heartstopper," "Annihilation'south Possible" is about LGBTQ joy. The trauma often portrayed on flick and tv when information technology comes to trans stories is nowhere to be institute in this world.
"This is an aspirational story. Information technology's almost similar a fairytale," Porter says. "We know that. It'south a look at what nosotros can be. That'due south what nosotros every bit artists get to do — await at what we can be and what we should be."

Reign recalls the lack of support she had in high school. When I suggest she host an "Annihilation'south Possible" screening in her hometown, she says, "I never thought almost that. I take not been back to my high school since I graduated. I was similar, 'Peace. I'yard out. You know, it's been existent, just I'thou a little tired.' But yeah, that's definitely something to think about."
The $10 million movie, which was brought to Porter past Killer Films' Christine Vachon and produced with MGM'due south Orion segmentation, was shot in just 25 days. Information technology will premiere July 22 on Amazon Prime Video.
"The only things that are doing well in moving picture theaters right now are Marvel movies and blockbusters," says Porter, who is also ready to direct an episode of Play tricks's upcoming truthful-offense anthology series "Accused." "'Cinderella' was a hit because they didn't effort to put it in theaters. This is going to have a similar trajectory. While information technology'due south not seen in the picture show, Reign has a large, colorful sunflower tattoo on her left shoulder.
